WHAT CAN I CATCH?
Spring Steelhead (March–May)
Known as the “fish of a thousand casts,” steelhead are among the most sought-after freshwater gamefish in the region. These powerful migratory trout are targeted using fly, conventional, or centerpin fishing techniques.
Resident Brown, Rainbow & Brook Trout (Spring–Fall)
Lake Superior’s tributaries provide excellent opportunities to pursue resident trout throughout the season. These fish are targeted using both fly and conventional fishing gear in a variety of river environments.
Summer & Fall Lake-Run Brown Trout (July–October)
These aggressive fish spend much of their lives in Lake Superior before returning to tributaries. Active night feeders, they are often targeted with topwater flies and lures after dark or with subsurface presentations during low-light morning and evening hours.
Fall Steelhead, Salmon & Lake-Run Brown Trout (September–November)
The Wisconsin Brule River offers some of the region’s best opportunities to target migratory fish. Fall brings the highest overall concentrations of steelhead, salmon, and lake-run brown trout, creating some of the most productive fishing of the year. Fly, conventional, and centerpin techniques are all utilized depending on conditions.
